My Summer Car – Real-Life Car and Life Simulator

651

My Summer Car is a pretty realistic car simulator – probably more realistic than you expect it to be. Build your own car, tune it, find a job, and try to maintain your well-being at the same time.

Graphics — 4.5/5

My Summer Car is an indie game in early access, so the graphics are alright. It can be improved, yet there are enough small details that set up the right atmosphere. For instance, there is a fly that constantly buzzes around you, and you need to eat, drink, sleep, and wash – just like in real life. Voice action in Finnish only reinforces the impression.

Also, roads and landscapes are beautiful, and contemplating them may reduce the frustration for a little – and that is a game where you will probably get frustrated. Just don’t get distracted by the landscapes when you’re driving and save your progress from time to time.

Gameplay — 4.5/5

So, it’s the 1990s in Finland, and you’re the young man who has to fix a car first. Fixing here means recomposing all the car pieces, and this process will probably take long. If something is wrong, the car won’t move, or some other issues occur. By the way, there are no instructions at all, so you have to either be really good at cars or use a tutorial in order to fix your car.

When the car is fixed, you can tune and upgrade it. Find a job to earn some money, don’t forget to sleep, drink, and eat – otherwise you may die if you’re too tired or too hungry. In this game, you even need to wash and urinate which is the kind of realism you expect from a car simulator, isn’t it?

Obviously, your car needs to pass the inspection; otherwise, you may get in troubles with the police. You have access to various other vehicles, cars, and boats that you can use to get groceries or tow your project car from ditches – that happens, too.

If your car is crashed, be ready to wait for up to 20 minutes before you can get a ride or a bus. This experience definitely makes the gameplay less appealing.

Controls — 4.5/5

The physics are quite decent, yet there are some flaws. So, the controls take some time to get used to them. As there are multiple actions available, be careful with a keyboard. Remember that ‘P’ is a urinate button, the ‘N’ is a swearing one (yes, in this game you can swear in Finnish), and by pressing 'M’ you will flip the bird. Indeed, My Summer Car is a life simulator for people who have a sense of humor.

Replay Value — 4/5

You should definitely save your progress from time to time since if you fail, you start from the very beginning. Attempts to fix the car will probably take too long, so replaying this part of the game is only for hardcore car fans.

As for the rest, My Summer Car may be interesting and even addictive to some extent for a couple of weeks. However, there is not so much to do, so the game might eventually get boring.

Conclusion

In a nutshell, My Summer Car is a simulator for hardcore fans of the genre – or of the cars themselves. It’s quite a challenging life simulator as well so your game experience won’t be limited to only driving. It’s also a clear illustration of why you definitely shouldn’t drink alcohol before and when driving a car.

If you don’t mind quirky humor, obscene gestures, and swear words as a part of the gameplay – you should give it a try. Just don’t give up on the very first task – I promise, the game will get better.

Conclusion

This fiddly game is about how things are going wrong, and how you react to that. Very realistic life simulator as well as a car one.

Pros : Real-life simulator with plenty of small details and features
You can tune and upgrade your car however you like
You can toggle off the permadeath mode that is set by default
Great humor, but it’s not for everybody

Cons : Too difficult to fix the car in the first place
The graphics can be improved
The physics are imperfect
Might get boring
