Sonic Mania, is an action-adventure video game developed by Christian Whitehead and published by SEGA. It was released for Nintendo in August 2017. It is a two-dimensional masterpiece joyously met by all Sonic fans.
The main thing that you need to know about Sonic Mania is that it works very well with the mechanics of the past. Sonic rushes forward, collects rings, destroys bosses and receives emeralds of chaos in secret zones.
Graphics — 4.5/5
Being a 2D video game, Sonic Mania is pixelated and choppy. Cute retro graphics remained, and a moment of novelty appeared with updated animations for the characters.
Music also did not disappoint us, but only deepened the retro-atmosphere with the remakes of classical tracks from Sonic and several new ones in the same genre. All levels of the old games are pretty redone, and the bosses are replaced with new ones. The new levels turned out well. We can not say that they are masterpieces, but in general they are dignified. Sonic Mania preserves the charm of vintage classics, with its robust colors and square block-like pixelated animation.
Gameplay — 5/5
Sonic Mania features three main characters that players can select to play: Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles. Each of them possesses one unique skill.
Eight new playable zones have been added to the original four. These zones are remixed and comprise of concepts and ideas from older Sonic games. Each zone is divided into two acts, through which Sonic and Tails must progress by fighting past their enemies and hindrances. At the end of every act, you will meet the boss face to face.
With in-game special bonus stages, you can collect items to increase your character's speed and unlock the ending of the game. In the attack mode, the players must race through each act as quickly as they can to earn a slot on an online leaderboard.
Controls — 4.5/5
The player has to use the directional buttons to walk right and left and hold the buttons to run. To spin, you should click on the Down button while running. Press the Down button to crouch. To look up or down while stationary, hold the Up or Down buttons. To Spin Dash, press and hold the Down button and follow that with the repeated pressing of the Y, A, or B button. To restart a Time Attack quickly, press and hold down on the X button. To open the Pause Menu, press the + button. If you played the recent Sonic versions, there would be no difficulties with managing the controls.
Replay Value — 5/5
Despite the imitation of two-dimensional classics, the monotonous Sonic Mania cannot be called at all desire. It has an ideal rhythm. The developers that drive Sonic into the conditions of the classic runner (one of the intermediate bosses), or even begin the session of the retardation. Sonic Mania is built on unpredictable contrasts. To foresee what else the developers threw out, it's almost impossible.
Sonic Mania - this is exactly the "Sonic," about which we dreamed for many years. This is a modern game that dexterously juggles the mechanics of the past and makes you look at the familiar levels from a different angle. In addition, this game is simply beautiful. Quality 2D, impressive effects, and this burning feeling of nostalgia in your heart.
Sonic Mania is a perfect gift for all retro lovers. Quite complex and incredibly diverse, this game makes us remember why we loved platformers of the past. Sonic Mania is engaging and stimulating and keeps gamers occupied for hours on end.
