Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 is a role-playing game in the anime style based on the Dragon Ball Z series. The action unfolds on Earth of our days, which does not negate the presence of magic and other attributes of fantasy. In the center of the narrative is the Sayan alien Son Goku, an infant abandoned to us from outer space to destroy humankind. However, everything went awry, and from the potential liquidator our character grew up a defender of earthlings, whose help was especially useful when from the depths of the universe all kinds of creatures came crashing.
What are the dragon pearls here, you ask? This is a recurring story of the manga. If you collect all seven balls - the dragon will appear and fulfill the cherished desire, for example, resurrect a friend.
Graphics — 4.5/5
The graphics of the game are simple, and visually the picture is very similar to the anime, which received an additional volume. The developers decided to take samples of sounds directly from the anime, that's why they sound is strange as for the game, but fans will enjoy this old-school sounding.
So, if you are a fan of the Dragon Ball universe, you will enjoy the graphics entirely. If you are familiar with this world only by hearsay, but you want bright, cheerful fights with many opponents, and you are not afraid of the visual style of the game - then you will like the project too. But those who do not know which side to approach such games, are waiting for a coherent consecutive plot or want to see super-graphics, in Dragon Ball XenoVerse there is nothing to do.
Gameplay — 4.5/5
At the very beginning of the game, you should pick a fighter and customize him as you want. Determine the gender of your character, select a race from five available (Human, Saiyan, Namekian, Frieza’s race and Majin), set his voice, facial features and other details of appearance. Thus you can create your unique hero or make a copy of a favorite manga character as well as mix and match styles.
When your Dragon Ball hero is ready, you join the Time Patrol - a team of heroes who protects Conton City and the Dragon Ball Z timeline. After that, you get into a special hub where you can learn new blows, switch the characteristics of your hero, chat with other players, find tasks or purchase some additional accessories and all sorts of useful things from the stores located here. Then you start performing your primary tasks according to the gameplay as well as some additional quests.
All battles are shown in the three-dimensional world, so most of the fightings take place in the air. Heroes are so powerful that they toss each other through canyons, beat faces with massive fists, instilled enemies on the ground, throw them almost beyond the atmosphere and so on. All their actions look incredible on the screen and therefore, the game is unimaginably fun to play. During your battles, you should monitor such important scales as health, energy, and endurance. Otherwise, you’ll die, lose your balance or won’t be able to make a strong attack at all.
Also, as you progress through the game, new characters, costumes for your hero, abilities and game modes, as well as other useful features, appear.
Controls — 5/5
Controls, at first glance, are pretty simple, on the main buttons you can find: a strong blow, a standard strike, a shot and that's it. Strong and standard blows are connected in bright and spectacular combos, throwing the opponent away, then back to the ground. In such cases, you have to make a powerful leap to the enemy, to catch him and continue the fight.
You can customize your warrior with special gear, helpful items, and combat skills that he learns from the quests or personal training. There are enough interesting tools and special abilities innate to use. You can grow a fighter that both looks and fights the way you like and the way it feels fun and rewarding for you to play.
Replay Value — 4/5
Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 has various exciting missions that will add some diversity to the gameplay such as finding the Dragon Balls or keeping them away from pursuing enemies. There is also some fun to play quests which you can go through with other warriors, but not all of them can be tackled this way; some of these quests are for a single-player mode only.
Combats look like in the show and aren’t similar to any regular fighting game. However, you still might feel the lack of depth in combats. Thus things can get a little bit repetitive for you.
This game is super pricey because it costs about $50. This price might be fine for the fans of the Dragon Ball Z series, but as for a role-playing game in the anime style, it is still too high. This game also has a few additional packs for purchase.
Since there are not many missions in the game, and the skills boosting plays a decisive role, the same quests will have to be performed many times. For each task, the character gains experience points, which can improve their abilities. The rating given for passing the mission directly affects the amount of experience gained, and the better we play, the more points we get. The complexity of the plot missions in places is so tucked away that you have to return to the previous tasks several times. This balance can turn the gameplay into a routine.
Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 is an exciting anime game with a unique and ambitious concept that is familiar to the fans of the Dragon Ball Z series and will give them enjoyable playing experience.
